TOPIC: problem with Net-C on linux

problem with Net-C on linux 6 Months ago
Hi, i am having a problem with net-c on linux (fedora core, up-to-date version of Java). For some reason, net-c believes its ip address is 127.0.0.1 (that's what shows up in the bottom corner of the main window), even though the ip address of the computer is 192.168.0.4).

I entered what I believe to be the proper broadcast ip (192.168.255.255), at which point another client on the network was momentarily able to see mine. However, while my client was able to send explicitly-addressed messages to that computer (which did not show up in my client's main window), my client was unable to receive any.

Am i doing something wrong? There are only 3 user-configurable options; another person i know of who tested the program reported the same problem (which did not crop up in a BSD distribution).

Hello Mike!

Well, you configuration seems to be OK.
Make sure that the ports defined in the configuration window are the same in every computer which uses Net-C. Also the Broadcast IP should be the same (and I think the one you set up is correct, it really depends on your network).

You must also make sure that you don't have any firewall configuration blocking the ports. Can be a firewall or, perhaps, a router.
In order to find the users in the network, Net-C uses the UDP port defined at "Broadcast Port". So you must allow your Net-C to open that port on your computer.

Hope that helps!
Please let me know if you have any trouble.

Regards!

Hi! Thanks for your advice...I figured it was a Linux firewall problem, but I didn't want to go to the trouble of learning about iptables if it would just turn out to be something else...I ran /sbin/service iptables stop, and then started your little app, and everything worked!

(Now I just have to figure out how to include an iptable exception for Net-C...*rrrrrgh!*...I hate Linux.)

Thank you!

No problem! I'm glad it helped you.

And remember, you only need to open the two ports defined in "Options". And only for the LAN interface.

I wish I could help you with the iptables stuff. Sorry.

Regards!
